Description

This classic birthday cake recipe is moist, buttery, and perfect for any celebration. Easy to make and flexible for substitutions.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 8-inch round cake pans.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time.

4. Mix in vanilla extract. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk.

5. Divide batter evenly between pans. Smooth tops and tap gently to release air bubbles.

6. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

7. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

8. Frost as desired once fully cooled.

Notes

You can freeze unfrosted layers for up to 2 months.

Try almond extract for added flavor.

Double the recipe for a three-layer cake.
